Post-Holiday Skin Recovery: Skincare Tips from a Makeup Artist

Updated: Jun 20, 2024

Hello, beauties! As an experienced makeup artist, I know firsthand how a holiday weekend full of sun, fun, and indulgence can take a toll on your skin. While we all need a bit of relaxation and enjoyment, it's essential to give your skin some extra TLC afterward. Here are my top five tips for revitalizing your skin after too much indulging.

1. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!

After a weekend of basking in the sun and perhaps a few too many cocktails, your skin is likely dehydrated. Rehydrate your skin by drinking plenty of water to rehydrate from the inside out. Aim for at least 8 glasses a day. Additionally, use a hydrating serum or moisturizer with hyaluronic acid to replenish your skin's moisture levels.

2. Cleanse Gently but Thoroughly

Your skin has been exposed to various elements over the weekend, including sunscreen, sweat, and environmental pollutants. Use a gentle, sulfate-free cleanser to remove all impurities without stripping your skin of its natural oils. Double cleansing can be particularly effective – start with an oil-based cleanser to break down makeup and sunscreen, followed by a water-based cleanser to remove any residual grime. One of my favorite cleansers is Dermologica's Micellar Prebiotic PreCleanse.

3. Exfoliate Wisely

Exfoliation is key to removing dead skin cells and promoting cell turnover, but it’s important not to overdo it, especially if your skin is already stressed. Use a mild exfoliant, such as a gentle scrub or a chemical exfoliant with alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), to slough away dead skin cells and reveal a fresh, radiant complexion. Limit exfoliation to once or twice a week to avoid irritation. My all-time favorite exfoliators is Kate Somerville's ExfoliKate.

4. Soothe and Repair

Sun exposure and indulgence can leave your skin feeling irritated and inflamed. Soothe your skin with products that contain calming ingredients like aloe vera, chamomile, and green tea extract. A hydrating sheet mask like Tatcha's Illuminous Deep Hydrating Lifting Mask, can also work wonders in delivering moisture and calming your skin. Don't forget to apply a good quality antioxidant serum to help repair any damage caused by free radicals.

5. Get Your Beauty Sleep

Finally, never underestimate the power of a good night's sleep. Your skin repairs and regenerates itself while you sleep, so make sure you’re getting at least 7-8 hours of quality rest each night. Elevate your head with an extra pillow to reduce morning puffiness, and use a silk pillowcase to minimize friction and prevent wrinkles.

Taking these steps will help your skin bounce back after a weekend of indulgence, leaving you looking and feeling refreshed and ready to face the week. Remember, your skin is your canvas, and taking care of it is the first step to achieving flawless makeup looks.

Stay glowing!

All the best!
